BCS HAS PROVIDED SOLUTIONS of various scope to VESSELS WORLDWIDE OVER OUR 35+ YEARS
Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels
The Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV) are the first large ships built by Seaspan Shipyards under the National Shipbuilding Strategy’s non-combat package.
BCS Automation has provided the OFSV class vessel; the John Cabot which was launched in 2020, a Winch Drive System.
Purpose of the OFSV:
- these vessels replace aging Coast Guard ships on Canada’s east and west coasts
- they provide a modern platform for critical scientific research
- capable of supporting search and rescue and environmental response when required
- performing fishing and acoustic surveys of fish and invertebrates
- collecting data on the abundance and distribution of marine species
- Studying marine ecosystems and assessing the impact of human activities on fisheries and ecosystem health
Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel
The OOSV; named the CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk, is to become the largest dedicated science vessel in the Canadian Coast Guard Fleet.
BCS Automation is providing the OOSV with a Ship Control and Monitoring System (SCMS); a “central nervous system” for the ship. As well as starter panels, switchboards & MCCs.
Purpose of the OOSV:
- to provide increased capability and capacity to support the marine science missions of Fisheries and Oceans Canada on our east coast
- conduct work to help improve Canada’s understanding of the Atlantic Ocean, which is home to some of the most productive marine environments in the world
- to study the impact that climate change has on the oceans, with the latest equipped scientific research apparatus technology
Joint Support Ships
BCS Automation provided services for Canada’s Joint Support Ships (JSS), which are built as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy. BCS contributed to the project by supplying automation and control systems such as Electrical Test Panels and Shore Connection Boxes necessary for the ships’ operation.
The ships are being built by Seaspan Shipyards and feature integrated systems from multiple Canadian suppliers.
Purpose of the JSS:
- underway support—re-supply of fuel, food, ammunition, spare parts and other supplies to ships at sea
- transporting and delivering cargo both in support of task group operations and in support to operations ashore
- to meet a range of possibilities in a uncertain future security environment
- self-defence functions and the ability to respond to Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats to allow for operations in high heat threat environments
Polar Icebreaker
BCS Automation is a key supplier for the Canadian Polar Icebreaker project, delivering critical electrical systems such as distribution and starter panels, motor control centres and switchboards to support the vessel’s demanding Arctic missions.
Purpose of the Polar Icebreakers:
- replace Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) ship Louis S. St-Laurent
- become Canada’s, and one of the world’s most powerful conventional icebreakers
- enable the CCG to ensure year-round presence in Canada’s North in support of Indigenous Peoples and other northerners
- high arctic science, including climate change research
- the ability to respond to major maritime emergencies
Innovation
In partnership with Seaspan Shipyards in their effort to develop cutting edge digital technology that will boost the marine shipbuilding industry, BCS has provided solutions in their Holoship program.
The Holoship is a virtual reality platform that allows ship designers to test out how components fit together and to get a much more detailed sense of how specific features will work long before any physical manufacturing takes place.
BCS has provided a visual system digital twin that would reflect information gleaned from the the ship control and monitoring system that is also being implemented by us. This collaborative project will help us in our goals to:
- continue creating digital solutions coded in Canada by Canadians to support Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy
- inspire Canada’s next generation of shipbuilders using emerging digital technologies
- adopting digital marketing strategies to increase exports and sales to international marine markets
